Atlanta Power Outage Causes Internet Connectivity Issues

On July 12th a major power failure affected both internet connection and voice services throughout Atlanta. A primary switching facility located on 56 Marietta Street that’s responsible for serving most ISPs throughout the city experienced a critical power outage, disrupting service for thousands of users in the area.

After resolving the issue, Digital Realty / TELX released the following statement:

“As an update to the Generator failure at 56 Marietta, the engineering team reports that power has been restored and all power systems have been normalized. A RFO, that will outline the root cause as well as the scope of the event, will be published. Further updates will be provided as they become available.
”

The switching facility on Marietta St. hosts the southeast’s most significant group of telecommunications companies, consisting of more than 60 carriers and over a hundred telecomm providers.

Despite the fact that this was the first time the facility required back up power in over eight years, as far the Centerpoint IT team can tell, it was a matter of “biting off more than you can chew”. Ideally, once the situation is reviewed, the demands on the Marietta facility will be spread out to more other locations to ensure this doesn’t happen again.
